Should I choose LCD or Plasma

One of the most commonplace appliances in any household is a television. In fact, many people have several different TVs in their homes. They rang in size from small LCD TVs that you can buy for one hundred dollars to extra large LED LCD TVs that cost a couple grand. Regardless, choosing the right television is a major investment.

The last time I went to buy a television, I quickly became overwhelmed. There were so many different kinds of televisions to buy – LCD, LED, Plasma, DLP, etc. Additionally, different brands of same technology had different features like different contrast ratios, different color densitys, and different resolutions. It was not an easy decision.

Of all the different types out there, I think the most popular are LCD and Plasma. Both technologies have their strong points and their weaknesses. Years ago, the type of TV that I wanted the most was a Plasma – the technology had much better color depth than anything else on the market. However, LED technology is kind of a game changer. With this technology, LCD TVs are taking over the marketplace.

LED LCDs are LCD televisions that use LEDs to provide the lighting for the screen. LED TVs come in two flavors – Edge lit and Full LED. Edge lit gets its name from the way the LEDs are positioned around the edge of the television shining the light inwards towards the center. Full LEDs however use LED technology to provide all of the lighting in the set. LEDs use such little power compared to traditional screens that they provide a compelling financial incentive.

In fact, I recently saw an energy star estimate posted on a 47 inch Philips television at the store. This TV was an LED edge lit LCD and the guide said that 6 hours of use per day at 11 cents a kwh would cost just 17 dollars per year. Per Year. I was very impressed at that low estimate. I couldn’t find an estimate on any of the Plasmas near by, but I believe they are significantly higher.
